H.A.N.A became a cinema, one of the center’s functions.
We screened the movie “The Trial of the Chicago 7” as a prompt to then discuss with our youth the counter-culture movements in America following the major events of 1968 that are regarded as the culmination of youth-led activism initiatives in America.
Inspired by the events in the movie, we reminded ourselves some moments of popular movements in Albania. Thus, the Student Protest in 2018, the Disarmament Protest in 2013, as well as other national or local protests in scope around causes that in one form or another have affected the economy and well-being of the residents, were some markers to jump into the conversation of the stages of activism models in our society.
And of course we had a question regarding the inhibiting factors of the initiatives of activism and resistance nowadays in Albania. Why are they heading towards extinction and why is seeking and fighting for your rights not part of the mindset of a citizen of our country, and in particular, of young Albanians?
We talked about how being aware of the lack of protest culture and that this consistutes a problem is a step forward in this battle. The challenge of building a new activist profile was presented, as the need to develop critical thinking that does not easily succumb to the “temptations” of apathy/indifference.
