In today’s globalized world, addressing environmental challenges requires not just innovative solutions but also fostering collaboration across borders and cultures. Our recent “Towards a Green Future: France-Albania Ecological Partnership” project beautifully demonstrated the power of youth, creativity, and international solidarity to inspire action for sustainability. Held from October 19 to November 2, 2024, at our youth centre and in Lezhë, Albania, this dynamic initiative brought together young people from diverse backgrounds to engage in ecological education, cultural exchange, and collective action.
The project kicked off with participants arriving in Lezhë, a city rich in history and surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. After settling in, everyone gathered for a warm welcome dinner featuring traditional Albanian cuisine. Icebreaker games set the tone for the weeks ahead, fostering group cohesion and creating an atmosphere of openness and collaboration.
Over the course of two weeks, participants dived into a variety of enriching activities that combined learning, creativity, and action:
– Exploring Nature: Guided tours to the Drin River and Kune Vain Lagoon exposed participants to Albania’s unique biodiversity. Activities like birdwatching and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural environment.
– Cultural Exchange: The participant youth shared stories, traditional songs, cuisines and taught games from their countries during cultural evenings. These moments celebrated diversity, built mutual understanding, and inspired cross-cultural friendships.
– Creative Action for Sustainability: Workshops on recycling and upcycling transformed discarded materials into art, while a media workshop with Nogo Association empowered participants to craft compelling videos promoting environmental awareness.
The program was designed to equip participants with practical skills and inspire them to advocate for ecological sustainability:
– Creative Arts: Participants learned how to upcycle old clothing and create functional items from waste, turning sustainability into a hands-on, creative endeavor.
– Media Production: A series of video production workshops taught the basics of screenwriting, filming, and editing, culminating in the creation of four impactful videos highlighting the project’s themes.
– Environmental Science: Guided explorations and interactive experiments emphasized scpecific approaches to understanding and solving environmental issues.
The exchange left an indelible mark on both participants and we hope our local community. Young people from different cultural, social, and economic backgrounds built strong, lasting bonds. Sharing personal stories and collaborating on projects deepened their mutual respect and understanding.
The project culminated in a final restitution event where participants presented their work and shared reflections of the two weeks exchange!
Looking ahead, us as one of the program’s organizers aim to strengthen pre-activity coordination and explore opportunities for further collaboration in the aspects of youth exchange programs. The success of this initiative highlights the vital role youth play in shaping a sustainable future and the profound impact of international solidarity in achieving it.
