A few of the youth part of our newsroom live in a neighborhood of the city that does not get the attention it needs, being in infrastructure and in an issue that was brought forth even in the naming of it.
We noticed that in Google Maps – the “Skenderbeg” neighborhood was renamed by using a derogatory name of Roma and Egyptian People.
Our group got together and spammed the app to edit the name back to its original naming. It was one of our youth – Bruno who managed to get the first response on the name change and the rest followed.
We further discussed that the deep rooted racism that people and the major impact it’s brining on people that live in the neighborhood being them Roma or not.
It is an issue faced on the daily and our youth try to give their input and make the changes that they can momentarily and hoping that in a near future this impact can be much more powerful.
