We had the pleasure of meeting the European Union Ambassador to Albania, Mr. Silvio Gonzato, with the youth part of our program. This meeting was held with the aim of discussing important issues affecting youth and society as a whole, linking them to our country’s goals of becoming a part of the European Union.
During the meeting, the youth had the opportunity to express their thoughts and concerns on a variety of important topics and received direct responses from the Ambassador regarding his perspective on these issues.
The hour long conversation was around these topics:
• Environmental issues: The discussion focused on matters related to environmental pollution and the importance of its protection, as well as the role of youth in supporting environmental initiatives. Specifically, we addressed the amended law on protected areas in our country and the incomplete process of waste management.
• New asylum seeker centers in Lezhë: The youth shared their impressions and, together with the Ambassador, discussed the need to respect human rights in these centers and ensure dignified treatment for the city where these centers are established.
• EU policies to improve employment conditions: Policies and programs implemented by the EU to improve employment conditions and encourage the autonomy of youth decision-making were discussed, a topic closely related to mass migration.
• Freedom of the media and investigative journalism: Another important topic was media freedom, where European standards for investigative journalism were discussed, emphasizing its significance for a democratic society. Concrete examples were given regarding media freedom in our country and the work needed to achieve EU-accepted standards.
The meeting was characterized by a relaxed and constructive atmosphere, resulting in deep inspiration for the more active participation of youth in democratic processes and their involvement in Albania’s EU integration process. The discussions contributed to increasing the interest and understanding of this process among the youth, highlighting their important role in this journey.
In conclusion, we express our heartfelt thanks to Ambassador Silvio Gonzato and the Europe House team for their readiness and support in organizing this important meeting for the youth involved in the H.A.N.A programs. This cooperation is a significant step in empowering youth and encouraging their active participation in society.
