With some of the young people of our pilot project “Differentiation of Waste at Source in Buildings 130 & 131 in Lezhë” we visited the company Vale Recycling which collects differentiated waste in the pilot area. The only operator in the district of Lezha with full capacities of composting, processing and recycling resulting in final products as well as raw materials for import or export.
The group learned that any waste stream can be recycled and re-circulated into the market as a new product, reducing environmental damage to a high %!
Currently, in Lezha the attention and intention to recycle is low, and the waste is buried or burned in the landfill of Bushati in the best case and ends up in illegal collection points, rivers and seas in the worst case. However, there is an infrastructure for more environmentally and community-friendly solutions. An infrastructure that enables the fulfillment of the legal waste management scenario to move from the current linear economy to the recommended circular one!
The Albanian Government in Decision No. 418, dt. 27.05.2020 “For the Approval of the Document of Strategic Policies and of the National Plan for Integrated Waste Management 2020-2035” considers the issue as one of the 6 national priorities! Specifically, specific objective 3 states that the necessary preparations must be made to fulfill the obligations from changes in EU directives, including the ambitious objectives of the Circular Economy Package.
The H.A.N.A Youth Center will join forces with the company Vale Recycling and the Municipality of Lezhë to contribute in this direction! In addition to the major challenges encountered, there is a perspective for a good result in this direction, so the efforts and journey of our pilot project continues!
